Staten Island, NY – Rising senior guard Michael Carey (Nassau, Bahamas/Lamar Consolidated [San Jacinto College]) of the Wagner men’s basketball team recently spent a week as a member of the Bahamas National Team, competing in the 2016 Centrobasket Championships in Panama City, Panama.
Carey, who garnered All-Northeast Conference (NEC) Second Team honors along with being named to the All-NEC Tournament Team and National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District 18 Second Team, averaged 8.2 ppg, 4.4 rpg, and 3.0 apg in five games for the Bahamas, which took place from from June 19-25, in helping lead his team to a fourth-place finish.
“Playing for the Bahamas was a great experience,” said Carey. “It was a great experience for me to be competing with a lot of guys who have NBA experience and are still playing every day. One of the players we competed against was JJ Barea of Puerto Rico, who plays for the Dallas Mavericks and is an NBA champion (2011) and a (two-time) Centrobasket MVP. He’s just a phenomenal athlete.”
In three of the five games, Carey scored in double figures. In the opener against the Virgin Islands, he finished with 12 points on10-of-12 shooting the free throw line in 31 minutes of action. The 6’5” wing, who averaged a team-leading 9.1 caroms per game last season during Wagner’s march to the NEC title game, grabbed eight boards vs.. the Virgin Islands while dishing out a team-best five assists Group B Group Round on June 19.
“Being a part of the Bahamas team, I got to play alongside a lot of pros on my team as well as future ones, such as DeAndre Ayton, who is ranked the No. 1 player on the (2017) ESPN Top 100,” added Carey. “The trip gave me an insight on how professional athletes think and act and throughout the nine days, I took in a lot of information and absorbed the experience.”
Against Mexico on June 23, Carey chipped in 10 points and six rebounds while shooting 4-of-7 from the field in 22 minutes of action. In the final game of the tournament for the Bahamas against Nicaragua, the Nassau-born Carey earned his first start, contributing 10 points, four assists, and two rebounds in 22 minutes of play as the Bahamas posted a 120-77 win.
“Panama itself is a beautiful country,” Carey added. “I’ve visited and played in a lot of places around the world because of basketball, but Panama was different. I think it’s because of the age I’m at now where I can see the economic side of things. To see how blessed I am to be in the position I am in today, all I can do is just continue to thank God in the process.”
