Team Bahamas finishes second at 2016 CARIFTA Swimming Championships

Despite coming up short on their quest for a third consecutive CARIFTA swimming title, the team that represented The Bahamas at this year’s meet in Fort-de-France, Martinique this week managed a second place finish against some of the best junior swimmers in the region.

Team Bahamas finished the four-day meet with a grand total of 774.5 points. Guadeloupe won the meet with 796 points, host county Martinique was third with 586.5 points, Barbados was fourth with 538.5 points and Trinidad and Tobago finished fifth with 437.5 points.

Guadeloupe collected 66 medal en route to the win (23 gold, 25 silver, 18 bronze). Team Bahamas ended with 56 (22 gold, 22 silver, 12 bronze), Barbados was third with 44 (18 gold, 11 silver, 15 bronze), Suriname was fourth with 22 (9 gold, 7 silver, 6 bronze) and Jamaica finished fifth with 25 (8 gold, 9 silver, 8 bronze).

On the final day of competition, The Bahamas won the 4x50m 15-17 boys relay in 1:37.48. That team was made up of Gershwin Greene, Miller Labury, N’Nhyn Fernander and Jared Fitzgerald.

The 13-14 boys 4×50 team also took the gold in their division as well, setting a new meet record in 1:40.54. That team consisted of T’lez Foulkes, Samuel Gibson, Darren Laing and Izaak Bastian.

And in the 11-12 4×50 boys relay, the team of Lamar Taylor, Rommel Ferguson, Roman Pinder and Taro Sears captured a silver medal in 1:54.73.

Fitzgerald and Fernander also finished first and second respectively in the 15-17 50m freestyle in 24 seconds and 24.seconds
