Bahamas heads into final day of 2016 CARIFTA swimming championships in second

Despite going up as much as 30 points on the third day of competition at the 2016 CARIFTA Swimming Championships in Fort-de-France, Martinique, team Bahamas couldn’t hang on to that lead and will now go into the final night of competition trailing Guadeloupe once again.

The Bahamas finished day three with a total of 580 points. Guadeloupe is out front with 601, host country Martinique is third with 425.5, Barbados is fourth with 379.5 and Trinidad and Tobago rounds out the top five with 328.

Guadeloupe leads the medal count with 48 (17 gold, 19 silver, 12 bronze). The Bahamas has 40 (16 gold, 17 silver, 7 bronze), Barbados is third with 32 (11 gold, 8 silver, 13 bronze), Surinam is fourth with 17 (8 gold, 4 silver, 5 bronze) and Bermuda is fifth with 13 (7 gold, 4 silver, 2 bronze).

The third day is usually a stronger one for The Bahamas, because of the 50 breast, an event that The Bahamas has consistently placed well in. However, the team struggled through both the 200 medley series as well as the 4×200 relays, which allowed Guadeloupe, who came into the day with the lead, to get back on top.

Team Bahamas will have to be strong across the board tonight if the look to come back and capture a historic third consecutive title.

Lilly Higgs won the 50 breast in 33.44 seconds. Her sister Margaret was second in 33.83seconds, followed by Kamry Joachim of St. Vincent and the Grenadines in 33.99 seconds.

N’Nhyn Fernander took the 15-17 boys 50 breast in 29.57 seconds, Izaak Bastian won the 13-14 boys 50 breast in 30.41 seconds  and Zaylie Thompson was second in the 11-12 girls 50 breast in 38.38 seconds.
