A landmark achievement for Bahamians on the basketball hardwood, Lashann Higgs continues to add achievements to her star studded high school career.

Higgs became the first Bahamian player to be named a McDonald’s All-American when the prestigious list of top high school prospects in the United States was revealed last week.

Higgs, a Harbour Island native, is a senior at Cedar Ridge High School in Houston, Texas, where she is currently averaging 27.1 points, 8.9 rebounds, five assists and 3.6 steals per game.

“I consider it a privilege,” Higgs told Joe Harrington of the Round Rock Leader, “I’ve been working really hard to get to this point and its been one of my high school goals to go to the McDonald’s high school All-American game and compete. I’m just really thankful to be in this position.”

Higgs, who has already committed to join the University of Texas Longhorns next fall, recently led her Cedar Ridge Raiders to an outright District 13-6A championship.

She finished with 26 points in a 64-37 win over Pflugerville Tuesday night and is currently ranked no. 6 in the espnW HoopGurlz rankings for the Class of 2015.

The McDonald’s All-American game will be played April 1 in Chicago, Illinois.

Several Bahamian players have received McDonald’s All-American nominations in the past, including Nathan Bain of the Sunrise Christian Academy Buffaloes in Bel Aire, Kansas, who received a nomination for 2015.

However, Higgs was the only Bahamian player to advance to the final stage in the selection process, which begins with hundreds of players nationally in the United States.

Higgs also is an excellent student. She has a 3.5 GPA.

The McDonald’s All-American Game is an All-Star game for American and Canadian boys’ and girls’ high-school basketball graduates.

Consisting of the top players, each team plays a single exhibition game after the conclusion of the high-school basketball season, in an East vs. West format.

As part of the annual event, boys also compete in a slam dunk contest, a three-point shooting competition, and an overall timed skills competition.

The girls compete in the three-point shooting competition and the overall-skills competition.

The boys’ game has been contested annually since 1978, and the girls game has been played each year since it was added in 2002.
