BBA To Host Senior Nationals In Honor Of Fred “Papa” Smith

The Bahamas Baseball Association is preparing to host the first phase in their annual celebration of the sport and a local legend.

The Andre Rodgers Senior National Championships will be hosted June 6th – 9th in honor of Fred “Papa” Smith.

The event will feature 4 teams in the 23u and 6 teams in the 16u divisions, vying for the national title at the Baillou Hills Complex and the National Stadium.

The 23u teams will play three group games and the u16 teams will play five games in the round robin format.

Medal games in both divisions will be played on sunday.

The Community Baseball League are the defending champions in 23u and the Junior Baseball League of Nassau are the 16u defending champions.

Other participating leagues include the Freedom Farm Baseball League, Ed Armbrister Baseball League, Grand Bahama Little League, Legacy Baseball League, and the Abaco Youth Baseball League.

Smith is a revered figure in Bahamian baseball, celebrated for his significant contributions as a player, coach, and mentor. In 1968, he signed with the Cleveland Guardians organization, reaching as high as triple-a.
