Former Norfolk State University star D’Shon Taylor will be taking his game to the next level this fall, as the 6’5” wingman signed a pro contract to play for Al Mina of the Iraq Basketball League last week.
As a senior at Norfolk State, he averaged 13.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.2 steals. He appeared in 33 games and made 29 starts. He was also a standout for the Bahamian national team that played in the Centrobasket tournament in Panama City, Panama. His eight point, six-rebound performance in a win over Nicaragua was his best of the tournament.
Team Bahamas went on to finish seventh at Centrobasket, which featured some of the top players in the world. Along with Centrobasket, Taylor also played in a pair of pro-am tournaments to boost his stock before signing. For his effort, he was named to the 2016 Portsmouth Basketball All-Tournament team and earned honorable mention for his play in the Gotham Hoops Invitational.
In his final two years with the Norfolk State University Spartans, Taylor finished 15th overall in three pointers made (94). He was also 16th in attempts with 265 and 17th overall in terms of percentage.
As a junior, Taylor averaged 13 points and five rebounds per game while shooting over 45 percent from the field. Before suiting up for the Spartans, the New Providence native spent his freshman season at John Brown University where he averaged 9.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Following the season he was named to the All-Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament team. He then transferred to Garden City Community College as a sophomore. He averaged 7.4 points and 3.2 rebounds per game for them.
Prior to departing to play collegiately in the United States, Taylor led the R.M. Bailey Pacers to a Government Secondary Schools Sports Association (GSSSA) title and a Hugh Campbell Invitational title in the same year.
