Marvel’s Civil War Is Still A Captain America Movie

by TIMMAY

May 6th will see the start of Marvel’s Phase 3, will Captain America: Civil War. This movie will see just about every [Disney] Marvel character, except for Thor & Hulk, who are being saved for Thor: Ragnarok. It’s based loosely on the 2006 comic book event, that saw just about every character in the Marvel Universe split on the Superhero Registration act. Due to movie rights, it is impossible to replicate the the comic book version to it’s fullest, and that’s okay. Some people are calling Civil War, The Avengers 2.5, that isn’t the case. Let me tell you why this movie is truly Captain America 3.

Winter Soldier to date is still  [Disney] Marvel’s best movie, from the story to the action. It ended with Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson (Captain America and The Falcon) searching for Bucky (James Buchanan Barnes aka the Winter Soldier), because it seemed as if he was regaining his memories. For those not in the know, Bucky was kidnapped by Hydra during World War I , brainwashed and frozen and re-frozen whenever Hydra needed him to assassinate an enemy. Over the course of Captain America 2, Bucky regained fragments of his memories.

Steve is man lost in time, and while he has forged a friendship with fellow soldier Wilson, Bucky was/is his childhood friend. It’s no surprise that when Bucky regains his memories, Steve is ready to put it all on the line to defend his friend’s innocence. Add this to his disdain for how the government, SHIELD and Tony Stark’s (Iron Man) have been dealing with things over the course of the years (and movies), you can see why the heart of Civil War’s conflict, is Captain America’s actions. If he gives up on Bucky, there is not split in the Avengers. If he goes along with the government’s plan to regulate superheroes, there is no one willing to challenge it.
The Sokovia Accords, which is most likely named after the destruction in the final act of Avengers: Age of Ultron, which serve as the Superhero Registration Act of this movie. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), no existing superhero has an identity, so it makes sense for the issue that Tony and Steve disagree on is about superhero regulation.

Civil War will see the introduction and serve as the solo movie launching pad for the King of Wakanda, T’Challa (Black Panther) and the MCU’s version of Spiderman (Peter Parker or as Tony calls him, underoos). Spiderman will debut the summer of 2017 while Black Panther will debut the summer of 2018. These stories will still serve as some purpose to Captain America’s story. It’s rumored that T’Challa is after Bucky for the murder of his father T’Chaka, but that Bucky has been framed and Captain America has decided to defend his friend’s innocence. In the comics, Peter Parker relates to Tony because they both are scientists and Iron Man was the inspiration that led to Spiderman. However, after disagreeing with Tony’s methods, Parker defects to Tony’s side of the conflict. I can see this ringing true for the movie, because Spiderman is the only superhero in the MCU with a secret identity.

Everything about this movie always leads back to Captain America. If that’s not enough to classify this as a story about Steve Rogers, then remember this. The comic book version of Civil War ended with the Death of Steve Rogers, with Bucky picking up the mantle of Captain America. There is a strong chance that this happens. We will all see on May 6th.
