Team Bahamas falls to second on day two

Bahamas Swimming Federation (BSF) officials expected a rough going on the second day of competition at the CARIFTA swimming championships in Fort-de-France, Martinique, but a few bright spots towards the end of the meet and the relays helped to close Guadeloupe’s gap heading into day three.

Almost a 40 point swing saw The Bahamas go from first to second on day two. The team finished the day with a total of 407 points, trailing only Guadeloupe, who leads the way with 424 points. Host country Martinique is third with 293 points, Barbados is fourth with 288.5 and Trinidad and Tobago rounds out the top five with 236 points.
Team Bahamas currently has 28 medals (10 gold, 11 silver, 7 bronze). Guadeloupe has 34 (12 gold, 14 silver, 7 bronze), Barbados has 28 (8 gold, 7 silver, 11 bronze), Suriname is fourth in the medal hunt with 11 (5 gold, 5 silver, 3 bronze) and Bermuda is fifth with seven (5 gold, 2 silver).

Both the girls and boys 15-17 4×100 medley relay teams struck gold in the final event of the night to trim down what was almost a 40 point spread for Guadeloupe.

The boy’s team of Albury Miller, Alexander Encinar, N’Nhyn Fernander and Jared Fitzgerald won in 3:58.80. Martinique was second in 3:59.26 and Trinidad and Tobago was third in 4:02.66.

The girls relay team of Celia Campbell, Lilly and Margaret Higgs and Simone Stirrup stopped the clock in 4:31.42.

Margaret and Lilly also finished first and second respectively in the 400 medley. Margaret took the gold in 5:09.02, while Lilly captured the silver in 5:12.93.
Lilly also got another silver in the 200 freestyle in 2:08.54.
Izaak Bastian was second in the 50 butterfly in 26.24 seconds, Peter Morley was third in the 13-14 100m backstroke in 1:03.53, Virginia Stamp finished third in the 13-14girls 100m backstroke in 1:08.71, Lamar Taylor was third in the 50 butterfly and Karelyn Cabral captured a bronze medal in the 11-12 girls backstroke.

Ferander finished fourth in the 15-17 boys 50 butterfly, Samuel Gibson was fifth in the 13-14 boys 200 freestyle in 2:05.51, Roman Pinder finished fifth in the 11-12 boys 400 medley.
