Caribbean Boxing Showdown set for December 16

Professional boxing will return to the capital again next month, in the form of a three-fight card hosted by Sports Nutrition Products Bahamas and headlined by Bahamian lightweight champion Meacher “Major Payne” Major.

Action is set for December 16 at Kendal G.L. Isaacs National Gymnasium.

In the eight-round main event, Major will take on Puerto Rican Alex Perez The fight will be Major’s second since returning from a severe foot injury that he suffered back in 2014 in a bout with Brazilian Roger Rosa.

“Firstly I’d like to give God the praise. Without him, I would not be doing what I love,” said Major. “I feel much better now, compared to my last fight in April. There is little doubt in my mind about my injury. I’m fully healed and there is no doubt within myself.

“I never dreamed I would still be fighting at the age of 35, which is old for a boxer. I would even say for most sports in general. I’d like to thank Sports Nutrition Products Bahamas for hosting another event and also thank my sponsors Buttons Formal Wear, the Sports Solution and Tab Therapy for supporting me.”

Major encourages boxing fans of all ages to come out and support high level boxing. The undercard features undefeated Haitian amateur heavyweight Deucas Delain, who will turn pro when he takes on Bahamian Bernard Rolle.

Looking to bounce back from a tough loss in his last fight, Lester Brown will square off with Pierre Enabe, while Hinsley “The Bruiser” Strachan will take on Remy Felisier. In his last fight against Martin Anderson, Major looked sharp despite a long lay off. Major sent Anderson to the canvas with a right hand midway through the second round.

After a standing eight count, Anderson signaled to the referee that he was hurt and couldn’t continue. As for Brown, who was also on that card, he went the distance against Jamaican Toriano Nicholas. The fight was originally called a draw, but was later changed to a win for Nicholas.
