Usually when an artist gets his swag jacked, they struggle to break through to the mainstream. Do you know who Bridget Kelly is? I’m sure most people, unless you’re a music fan,  do not. I know for a fact that you know Frank Ocean’s “Thinking About You” – which was a song he wrote for Bridget, but it leaked on the internet. She was never able to kickstart her career, and this song took Frank to the mainstream.

Shelley Marshaun Massenburg-Smith, better known as D.R.A.M., didn’t experience a songwriting mishap, but just when his song “Cha Cha” was about to make it big, Drake’s “Hotline Bling” dropped, and skyrocketed to #2 on Billboard’s Top 100. This song owned the latter part of 2015, and the general public never even learned how much Shelley likes to chacha.

D.R.A.M., which stands for Does Real Ass Music, had his own song featured on The Social Experiment‘s, Surf. The debut album of Donnie Trumpet & Chance The Rapper’s band was highly anticipated, and D.R.A.M. was the only person to have a solo feature on the project. “Caretaker” was such a good track, he added TDE’s SZA to the track and placed it on his mixtape, Gahdamn!

Still, these tracks weren’t enough to give him the look he needed. In late April however, the Lil’ Yachty assisted Broccoli dropped. This was a song of Summer 2016 candidate, and it still gets plays to this day. This song is definitely an ear-worm, but it isn’t a perfect depiction of D.R.A.M.’s music. With his vibrant videos and off the wall track titles, like “Cute” and “Cash Machine”, show that he has personality and imagination. He’s one of the rare artists that actually get to forge their own career path after getting their style jocked.
