BASEBALL is arguably the sport with the most populous and effective development programme in the country and two of the leaders have opened registration to attract new players to the game.

Freedom Farm Baseball League and Junior Baseball League of Nassau have both opened registration for the 2016-17 seasons.

Freedom Farm’s registration takes place every Saturday throughout the month of September, 10am to 1pm at the organisation’s complex in Yamacraw.

“If you are interested in your child learning the fundamentals and discipline of baseball and softball, bring them and come and be a part of a vibrant and growing youth organisation. Building lives and educating the youth through sports.”

JBLN Registration is available online atwww.jblnbaseball.com and registration is also available every Saturday in September and October 1, 10am-2pm at the Field of Dreams at the St Andrew’s School campus. Tryouts will take place October 8, followed immediately by the draft.

The Pre-Season for the league begins November 16 and will continue for five weeks, concluding on December 8.

The regular season begins Wednesday, January 11 with the official opening day taking place on Saturday, January 14.

Each of the leagues fields several hundred boys and girls ranging from age 4-18 in approximately seven divisions.

Following the trial period and draft, Freedom Farm traditionally begins its opening day celebrations with a gathering of parents, sponsors, coaches, family and friends to worship at Holy Cross Anglican Church.

“The players are challenged and inspired to be sportsmen and sportswomen, disciplined and always doing the very best. Parents are generally encouraged to support their offspring by attending practices, games and purchasing the equipment for the game. They are also requested to assist the Freedom Farm League, wherever possible, to include coaching, umpiring, scoring and taking care of the fields,” according to a press release.

Following the service, the seven divisions parade to the Freedom Farm fields.

JBLN also stages a similar opening event, featuring a procession of the participating players, an opening ceremony featuring alumni and dignitaries from the Bahamian sporting community, followed by the opening pitch and play in various divisions.
