Jones Transfers to Sam Houston State

Grand Bahama native Phillip Jones will be taking his talents to Sam Houston State for the 2016-17 collegiate basketball season.

The athletic wingman played for USTA the past three seasons, and is now transferring to play his senior season for coach Jason Hooten and the Bearkats.

Since he’s already earned his bachelor’s degree, Jones is immediately eligible for the Kats as a graduate student.

In 62 games over the last three years, Jones scored 342 points and grabbed 297 rebounds.

“Phillip is an extremely explosive athlete who can play above the rim,” Hooten said. “He can really rebound the ball and will be a nice fit for our team next season as a power forward.”

The 22-year-old’s freshman season was his best at USTA. He averaged 7.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per game, while playing just over 22 minutes per game.

“Phillip is a guy who had an up-and-down career battling injuries his sophomore and junior seasons,” Hooten said. “But he is healthy now and is excited about starting a new chapter in his career at Sam Houston, joining a team that is built to compete for a championship next year.”
